It's been a while since my last blog entry. Life sometimes gets in the way of things. But that's okay, that's life. Some of you may have noticed that I stopped taking orders for a while which confused a lot of people. Without going into all the gory details, I needed a break because I was a little bit broken. I'm sure we can all agree that family comes first, and that's what that was all about....putting myself and my family first. Now, however things are looking up and my diary is once again open to taking orders. I won't be taking on as much as I have in the past so as not to burn myself out again and I will be taking regular breaks throughout the year.
Now that that's out of the way, let's talk about wedding cakes! Wedding cakes are my passion, we all know that! I still get a kick out of seeing piping hot cakes fresh out of the oven turned into stunning pieces of art adorned with handmade sugar flowers, ruffles, delicate stencilling, lace....I could go on and on! So today we are going to talk about getting the perfect wedding cake for you from my perspective. These are the things I think you should take into account when designing your wedding cake....
THE NUMBER OF GUESTS...for dessert or coffee?
If the size of your cake is solely determined by the number of guests you need to serve then make sure your cake maker knows this. The size will also change depending on whether it's being served as dessert or with coffee later on in the evening. If the size is determined by the look you are going for, then it's an entirely different story. If you like the look of a grand cake but don't need that many serves, you can opt for fake foam tiers. If you want a small cake but it doesn't provide enough serves for your guests, a 'kitchen cake' can be supplied to make up the extra serves.
CAKE FLAVOURS....I want them all!
That's a difficult decision isn't it!? Your tiered wedding cake can be all one flavour or many cake makers will have the option to choose a different flavour for each tier. Cake samples are good way to help you make your selection. In the past I have had sample boxes available for pickup, a cake tasting event held at my studio as well as samples at wedding expos. As we all lead such busy lives sometimes this isn't convenient that's why I am looking into mailing sample boxes a few times throughout the year so stay tuned!
DESIGN....be honest, how many hours have you really spent on Pinterest?!
Ok, so you want a cake that tastes amazing but you also want that wow factor when you and your guests walk into the room. And that wow factor doesn't have to be 5 tiers tall, small cakes can be jaw droppingly gorgeous too! So some factors to keep in mind when choosing the design of your wedding cake are most obviously the style of your wedding. Is the theme of your wedding rustic, vintage, modern? What colours are part of your theme and do you want them incorporated into your wedding cake? The possibilities for design are endless and this is proven by the amount of time we all spend on Pinterest searching for ideas! Feel free to provide images of cakes you have fallen in love with. These can be used to custom design the perfect cake for your wedding.
BUDGET....good cake aint cheap and cheap cake aint good!
It all really comes down to budget doesn't it? You could fall in love with a design only to find out that the price is much higher than you expected. Be upfront with your cake maker. If the cake you want is out of your reach, there are ways and means to get as close as possible and still keep within your budget (you may just need to make some sacrifices!). Just remember....'good cake aint cheap, and cheap cake aint good'!
REPUTATION....check it out!
Have you checked out the work of your prospective cake maker? Most cake makers these days have Facebook pages, Instagram accounts, websites etc. It couldn't be easier for you to check out their quality! Have a look at their latest designs and check out their reviews. It's also a good idea to check if they are registered with their local council and have the necessary insurance. Realistically, you could end up spending anywhere from $500 upwards so it's best to make an informed decision.
So in summary, make sure you are armed will all the right details and information before you make a start on choosing your perfect wedding cake and perfect wedding cake maker.
